Battery Passport guide
What data is required for an EU Battery Passport?
The useful answer is not "all 71 fields for every battery". The Commission's current guidance maps 71 data points and gives category-specific applicability for EV, LMT and industrial batteries.
Deadline: From 18 February 2027, each EV battery, LMT battery and industrial battery above 2 kWh placed on the market or put into service must have a battery passport under Article 77 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.
Data groups you should expect to map
- Battery and manufacturer/economic-operator identification.
- Model and individual-battery information.
- Materials, chemistry and circularity-related information where applicable.
- Performance, durability and use/health information where applicable.
- Conformity, repair, dismantling and end-of-life information.
- Source, update and access-control decisions needed to operate the passport.
Use the category matrix, not a universal checklist
The Commission's version 2.0 guidance (15 August 2026) indicates whether each data point is mandatory, optional, conditional or not to be filled/displayed as of February 2027 for each battery category. That means the first practical task is applicability mapping.
What to build internally
- A requirement/data-point matrix with the legal basis and category applicability.
- A source register with document/system and revision/date.
- A supplier request tracker for externally owned evidence.
- Named data owners and lifecycle-update responsibilities.
- A structured export for the chosen DPP implementation route.
